Pearls
For centuries, Bahrain has been known as the heart of the world’s natural pearl heritage, a place where the sea, nature and history came together to create some of the most sought-after pearls on earth. Long before oil, pearls were Bahrain’s greatest treasure. Its waters, enriched by unique underwater freshwater springs, created the ideal conditions for producing pearls of exceptional lustre, softness, and beauty.
Bahraini pearls became renowned across India, Persia, Europe, and beyond, making Bahrain one of the world’s most valued and important centres of the natural pearl trade. So prized were these pearls that Jacques Cartier, of the House of Cartier, travelled personally to Bahrain in 1912 to source the finest natural pearls directly from the Island’s waters.
His journey helped establish Bahrain’s reputation among the world’s greatest jewellery houses, and many of Cartier’s early high jewellery creations were built around pearls sourced from this island’s exceptional waters. Today, Bahrain remains one of the few places in the world where natural pearls hold both deep cultural and national significance.
This heritage is protected at the highest levels with remarkable pride and care, through Danat, Bahrain’s internationally respected authority for pearls and gemstones and other government institutions. Established in 2017, Danat serves as a world-class gemmological laboratory, research centre, and educational institution dedicated to the authentication, study, and preservation of natural pearls.
Building on Bahrain’s original Pearl & Gem Testing Laboratory founded in 1990, Danat helps protect trust, uphold standards, and ensure Bahrain remains the global reference for natural pearl excellence. Bahrain’s pearls are more than jewels, they are history, identity, and a living connection between the island and the sea. They are, quite simply, part of the soul of Bahrain.
